Pinkie and Collen went in partnership in early 2020 to provide a holistic service at their salon and nail bar. Pinkie is a 38-year-old mother of four and the founder of Pinkie’s Nail Bar which she founded in 2019 after realizing her deep passion for the art. Prior to that, she was working for a corporate company doing the same work. Her specialization is in providing manicure, pedicure, and eyelash fitting services.

Collen started with his hair craft in 2012 when he was working at his sister’s salon in the city where he is originally from, Nelspruit, in the Mpumalanga province. He moved to Johannesburg in 2015 to look for greener pastures in his field of work. He started working at various salons until he found himself partnering with Pinkie in February 2020. His specialization is in braiding hair, and dreadlocks. In addition to their services, they also have another assistant, John, who specializes in haircuts, hair ironing and curling. Amongst the three of them, they can provide all the necessary grooming services to their customers.

They describe their main challenges as bookkeeping, marketing, and competition, as there are other service providers on the same street. Their main method of attracting customers is through word of mouth. Collen mentions that he has recently started collecting his customer’s contact details to alert them about promotions as a marketing tool.
